TRUMAN FLYER

HANGING ON THE WIRE

Grounded in the depths of New York, Truman Flyer has made quite a mark in her young music career. Moving across the country, gig to gig, apartment to apartment, she’s finally ready to take a seat and enjoy the hard work she’s put into her first record, Hanging On The Wire. That seat will be beaming orange, on the M to the sun of the many artists who have come before her at Bowery Ballroom. Paul McCartney, Yo La Tengo, The White Stripes and many others have made the historic venue their home as they pass through New York. It’ll be the place Truman finally gets to celebrate the many years of hard work leading up to this moment. Dreamy, gritty, shiny, and melodic, her guitar reflects her personality well, and stands out amongst the many layers of her music.

“Im excited to have this finished piece of work that i’ve poured myself into. It feels like there’s all these expectations or momentum building up to its release, but it’s been building for so long. It’s been building since the very first song I recorded, True Love, and now we’re in the final stretch. It feels like this baby I’ve been carrying and my water has broke.”

This album began in the midst of some musical uncertainty. Not really knowing what direction she wanted to head in, she continued writing songs, releasing some of them as demos, and eventually showed True Love to her bandmates and producer Jimmy Staples. They decided to start recording that song shortly after and things quickly began forming. After the song’s release show in 2025, Alice Phoebe Lou heard the track and asked Truman to open a show for her. At the time, she had only the one track out and as a solo musician, just her and her acoustic guitar, in front of a sold out audience, tested out many of the songs she had been writing. She quickly began to record some of these songs.

“This recording process has been really eye opening for me. I think I had an image in my head before of what recording was supposed to look like.” You go somewhere with your bandmates, live there for a month and work out the album in a studio. That’s been a popular method amongst many musicians, and sounds like a great way to record an album, but truthfully, in today’s era of music and with the accessibility of quality recording gear, it’s become a much simpler process frequently. “It was just me and Jimmy in the studio every day. And here and there Kevin would come in and record guitar, and Jasper would come and lay down the drumming tracks. But it was just us in the basement, in Bushwick, making this album together.”

Always looking for new sounds and inspiration in her music, she feels environment can play a big factor. “In the city I feel like my songs are a little more angsty and pushed out with an emotional charge whereas upstate there’s more of a peaceful and contentment quality to my songwriting. This was a very New York City made album. Which I think you can hear in the sound. There’s a lot of hidden gems throughout the album. There are voice memos from train rides that I’ve taken that are buried in songs like Smoke + Mirrors and little treats throughout it all. And a man on the train said, “who will survive in America!!”
